Can I buy cat food in bulk if I only have one cat?

Posted by admin on December 24th, 2009 and filed under food only | 4 Comments »

As any cat owner must know, quality cat food is expensive. I only have one cat and I’d like to feed him Royal Canin (the vet recommended), but the small packs are really expensive while the 15lb pack doesn’t cost that much per pound.

Would the food eventually go bad? How could I conserve it?

You can buy a bigger bag. I suggest you keep (or pour) the food in an airtight container so it doesn’t get stale

In addition, the sea vegetable Fucus vesiculosis contains a concentrated source of minerals including iodine, which assists in the production of thyroid hormones necessary for maintaining healthy metabolism in all cells of the body.

When used regularly, these natural ingredients can help to assist your body in weight loss while also helping rid your body of harmful toxins. The result is a slimmer, more energetic and healthier you!

Together they can,

Does a time frame for getting food stamps count only business days?

Posted by admin on December 3rd, 2009 and filed under food only | 4 Comments »

I was told today (Friday of course) that my food stamps would be processed (semi-annual report) and I should have them on my card in 48-72 hours. Anyone know if it’s only business days, or since it was because the office was behind, would it count the weekend? I was supposed to get them on the 5th, but I guess the office was understaffed… Anybody know?

you"ll probally get them on sunday or monday but they always say 24-48 hours but mine always comes in like 2 hours ( im serious ) just keep calling your card the only day they wont load your stamps is on a holiday

Money and food question: What foods are cost effective to purchase with only 80.00 for the week?

Posted by admin on November 24th, 2009 and filed under food only | 9 Comments »

What food items are economical to buy and have good staying power? Particularly for a mom and 12 yr old son. This is hopefully the last time I intend to be in this difficult situation again!

Awww. So sorry to hear about your situation :(
Financial crisis are all around right now, which is devastating.
I would say get some: Almond Butter and Jelly (Since Peanut butter is on recall), and a large loaf of bread….this keeps kids happy and its healthy.
Buy some veggies from the freezer section. They are cheaper and they will last longer.
Purchase some spaggetti noodles, and sauce. This is usually 1$ for the noodles and the sauce is no more than 1.50$….
You can also, do canned fruit which is inexpensive about 1$ per can.
Get some Top Ramen Oriental noodles, which is a quick fix (just in case you run out of food, a big box of these at Winco, or Walmart will usually be no more than 3$ and you will have 24 packs) This is cheap, and will fill in the gaps.
Get a large bag of potatoes because you can do a lot with them (e.g. home fries, baked potatoes)
And get a couple gallons of water.
This should do for a week. Sorry to hear about this again, but to be honest,
I am a vegetarian, and I have tough times too, I will tell you, not purchasing the meat can save you a LOT of money…so avoid that for the time being, and ….the only reason why I told you to get canned fruits, and frozen veggies, are because they will stretch, they have good "shelf life", and are more cost effective than fresh fruits and veggies….

God Bless :)

How many cat owners only feed their cats dried food?

Posted by admin on November 21st, 2009 and filed under food only | 24 Comments »

I’ve got 6 cats, am unemployed and am finding it expensive feeding both meat and dried food. I’ve been advised in a pet store that feeding them dried food is perfectly alright. I just feel guilty about doing it.

I feed my cat a mixture of both. I would feel guilty feeding them dry food only. The way I look at it is that I wouldn’t like to have to eat dry food all the time, so why should I make them. I know it’s better for their teeth etc, but my two get a small portion of high quality wet food in the morning each and again in the evening. During the day and night they get to eat as much high quality dry food as they like. That way they get the best of both worlds.

Is it true that u can get cancer or ulsura in your stomach only if u drink cold water after u eat a hot food?

Posted by admin on November 19th, 2009 and filed under food only | 4 Comments »

i heard that u can get ulsura or cancer only if u drink cold soda, water, juice or beer or watever and mix it up with a hot food or watever that u ate but its still hot…….is that true?

I’ve heard that before, but I’m sure it’s not true. I do it all the time anyway.

and what’s an ulsura? Do you mean stomach ulcers? Ulcers are generally caused by bacteria, it’s NOT caused by stress or spicy foods as commonly thought. Stress and spicy foods just irritate it more.

Drinking hot and cold things together wont cause cancer. I’m more worried with the ingredients used in products that are possible carcinogens anyway.

Is it ok to give baby only rice cereal for 2 months and no baby food?

Posted by admin on November 15th, 2009 and filed under food only | 19 Comments »

We tried starting my 5.5 mo old on baby food twice and her tummy just does not tolerate it well. We tried sweet potatoes and carrots. I want to wait until she is 6 mo to try again. Is it bad that I have been giving her rice cereal for breakfast and dinner for the past 2 months? She tolerates that and she loves to eat with a spoon. Isn’t rice cereal only calories?
She is mostly breastfed. She does get some formula, but she is mostly bf.

Yes.

Baby’s main food source is still breastmilk or formula.

When my baby turned 6 months, her only solid meal was breakfast which was rice cereal. After 3-4 weeks, I gave her lunch as well.

She had rice cereal for about 2.5 months before I decided to try oat cereal.

It’s better to introduce foods slowly.

You know your baby best. Don’t be pressured to start baby on vegetables and fruits if her stomach is not ready.

My puppy will only eat his food off of the ground?

Posted by admin on November 12th, 2009 and filed under food only | 7 Comments »

Hi, my 7 week old Saint Bernard puppy will only eat food if I put it on the ground. I will put it in the bowl and he sniffs it. Then I spread it around on the ground and he will eat it. What can I do? He is wheened already. Thanks.
Lindsay:
My vet said 7 weeks was ok. That is why we got him at 7 weeks. Either my state says 7 weeks is ok, or my vet is an idiot?

A puppy will do what you train him to do. He won’t let himself starve. Leave it in the bowl and he’ll eat it when he’s hungry enough.

How do I get my cat to eat other food when he will only eat his current food and refuses everything else?

Posted by admin on November 6th, 2009 and filed under food only | 12 Comments »

My cat is allergic to his current food we recently found out, but he refuses to eat anything else. He has licked his belly bare, but would starve before eating anything else other than tuna. He is epileptic and has to take phenobarbital to stop seizures.
I have tried just putting other food down and making him eat that when he final is hungry enough, but he will seriously starve himself before eating anything else.

I can’t believe you people saying cats won’t starve themselves. That is so wrong. Cats WILL starve themselves. Dogs won’t. More importantly (you vet people should be ashamed for leaving this out), if a cat stops eating, it can start to develop fatty liver within two days or less. This can be very dangerous.

My cat is having a similar problem with food allergies. Fortunately, she likes everything. But when I’ve tried to switch her quickly, her system goes haywire. You have to switch gradually. Put about 10% of the new food in with the old and wait a few days, then increase the new food to about 20% of the total you feed, etc, until you’ve made a full switch. I’m not sure what you are feeding now but one very high quality food that cats have trouble refusing is Wellness Salmon dry food. It is very stinky. Cats love stinky. And it is a very high quality food without fillers or grains which is the main cause of allergies in cats. Wellness also has a regular food (not salmon) that would be just as good if you cat can’t have the fish.

Keep your cat eating, that is the most important thing. Research the effects on a cat’s body if it doesn’t eat. Damage can start happening within as little as a day.

Good luck to you. If you have any questions, feel free to email me directly. I don’t work for a vet but I’ve been researching cat food and diets for two years because of various health problems my cats have.
